Catriona Ross - Cool cat in a hot beast

Malay Mail, 15 April, 2007

The subaru legacy gt has what it takes to fulfil actress/tv host Catriona Ross’ need for speed. Based on her acting, which includes the impressive 'Korban Kala' and the most recent 'Rafflesia' (on air on RTM2 every Monday night at 9pm), there’s no way one could tell that our celebrity guest this week, actress/TV host Catriona Ross is the type who loves speed.

Moreover, if one were to take into consideration the way she talks and carries herself in person — poised, calm and soft-spoken — she would appear to be the type who would perceive cars as nothing more than a vehicle that transports her from one place to another.

That’s why, initially we were a bit worried if the car we were pairing her with that day, the Subaru Legacy 2.0GT courtesy of Motor Image Sdn Bhd, might be a tad too hot for her to handle. With its horizontally-opposed, 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged, DOHC 16-valve engine, the car can chalk up a top speed of 235kmph. And that might be a bit too fast for her.

With an overall length of 5,665mm, the beast appears to be a little bit too big for a lady driver like Cat.

Can she handle it?

“Of course, I can. I like the [Toyota] Supras and the [Nissan] Skylines. Unfortunately, I can’t own these high powered cars because if I do, I would give my mom, who would most of the time ride with me, a heart attack,” she laughed.

“Even my dad, he’d go ‘You don’t need fast cars. You just need a car to get you from one place to another,’” she said before adding: “However, there are times when I meet my guy friends who own a Supra or a Skyline, I’d borrow their cars and go for a spin.”

That statement left us speechless. Looks certainly can be deceiving. Seeing her eyes glow when she looked upon the Legacy, we knew Cat couldn’t wait to get her hands on the beast. Not so fast, though. We feel that we needed to interrogate her more, just to make sure that she wasn’t just all talk.

For starters, out of 10 how would she rate herself as driver?

“I’d give myself an eight and a half. My friends think I’m very reckless because I speed, the thing is, I only speed when I know it’s safe to do so,” she told us confidently. Cat then told us she had been driving for more than seven years and so far she never had any accidents or scary experiences whilst behind the wheel.

Well, almost

There were two incidents where she was followed home by another car and Cat considers that as something pretty scary for her. “It was pretty scary and I felt very weary about my safety after both incidents. So I thought I’ll just tint the windows of my car so that people can’t really see who’s driving. I think that made my car look sportier too,” she laughed.

She then added that she feels it’s pretty dangerous for single-lady drivers to drive on their own these days. “I think lady drivers have to be extra careful nowadays.” She suggested that lady drivers should make a habit of locking their doors when they get into their car . “Oh, also, try to avoid unlocking your car when you are far away from it,” she added.

Moving on to a lighter subject, we asked Cat what was the craziest thing she ever did in a car? Well, she certainly has done some crazy stuff. “The back seat of the car I’m driving now can be folded and I actually made a bed for myself out of it. I even brought my pillow and my blanket, everything,” she laughed.

Happy with her answers, we finally allowed Cat to burn rubber.

After a few spins, she was all praises for the Legacy 2.0 GT.

“Definitely, the best car with the best acceleration so far. It’s so smooth. I didn’t feel like I was driving a huge heavy car,” she said. As for the features she liked most about the car, Cat cited the state-of-the-art, RM 21,000 worth McIntosh audio system as one of her favourites. “I also liked the little tiny thing that tells you how many more kilometres you have before you have to refuel. That’s very important for me because I’m constantly on the road,” she added.

So, the Legacy would be perfect for...?

“Yuppies, grown-up boys who care about safety” she said.

“If it does come in a lady-like design, I’ll buy it straightaway. Currently it looks too manly and very boyish, of course, because of its power.

“Then again, maybe if I give it another shade of lime green I could possibly picture myself driving it,” she concluded with a smile.
