The Star newspaper dated 29th May 2007 reported that Jamal Abdillah, freed of a drug possession charge, celebrated his turn of luck at a magistrate’s court in Teluk Intan, Perak by belting out his trademark hit song 'Seroja'. Obliging the media and members of the public, the 47-year-old singer sang a few lines from the song after expressing his relief that his ordeal was finally over.

“The case has affected my career as I’ve not had a show in over five months. No one was willing to risk signing me up,” he lamented. But Jamal should know what we all already knew that DRUGS IS BAD FOR YOU.

The singer, whose real name is Jamal Ubaidillah Ali, walked free from the court here after the charge against him was dropped yesterday. Magistrate Azizah Aling had allowed the charge against Jamal to be dropped following an application by prosecuting officer Chief Insp K. Balakirshnan. Jamal and his nephew Azly Hussham Mohamad Zauti, 38, were said to have had 0.6g of syabu at the Teluk Intan Municipal Council Rest House workers’ quarters here on Jan 18 2007. Yesterday, Azly was sentenced to eight months’ jail for the offence. On Jan 19, Jamal had claimed trial while Azly pleaded guilty when charged with the offence.

Outside the courtroom, Jamal said he wanted to put the bitter episode behind him and hoped show producers would do the same. “I ask that they do not doubt me or lose confidence in me,” he said, adding that he would try his best to stay clean. Well, this is not the first time that Jamal had a drugs-related case. And surely this won't be his last either.

Say NO to drugs!
