"I was surprised when the officers told me this top was too revealing.
Sometimes I wear something similar when I go out in the day. This is sexy? I don't think so." - Siti Noor Idayu, NST.

"Is this too revealing?" asked Siti Noor Idayu. The two picture above (courtersy of News Strait Times and The Star) shows singer Siti Noor Idayu Abd Moin, 22 with the same dress that she wore when she was apparently detained by the Perak Religious Department (JAIP) officers at the Rum Jungle Club in Sunway City on 3rd July 2007. JAIP has ordered Siti Noor Idayu to appear before the Syariah Court on 6th August 2007 for “exposing her body” during a performance and “encouraging immoral activities”.
So what was the story? On Tuesday 3rd July 2007, JAIP officers raided an entertainment outlet in Sunway City where was performing with her band. It was a little past midnight. JAIP came in and rounded up all the Muslims. According to Siti Noor Idayu, one officer refused to handle their MyCard, referring to them as najis (unclean). JAIP officers later detained seven people, including four employees of the outlet, and brought them to the department office. They were put in a tiny room with the air-conditioner turned up. Siti Noor Idayu said she heard one officer tell the other: "Bekulah dia orang (Let them freeze).” A male officers kept taking photographs of from almost every angle. Siti Noor Idayu was made to stay overnight in that room until 10am. One officer finally came to record a statement at 8am, accused Siti Noor Idayu of consuming alcohol and drugs, being involved in immoral activities, and that her MyKad was a fake. Siti Noor Idayu took the breathalyser test twice and when the reading remained at zero, the officers looked frustrated. One officer even told her that the money she earned working in the outlet was duit haram (illicit money) and that her parents, children and future generations would all be tainted for using such money. The JAIP officer finally wrote a notice accusing her of dressing sexily and encouraging immorality. Siti Noor Idayu was released on that Wednesday morning on a RM1000.00 bond in one surety. Siti Noor Idayu has been singing in clubs for the last three years insisted that she never take any alcoholic drinks. |
The incident highlighted a narrow, intolerant face of Islam, a Malaysian opposition politician said, and urged the prime minister to intervene.
"It's of concern to all Malaysians because it affects the image of the country as a progressive and modern society." |
